How it works

Modern hypnotherapy, explained simply.

No trance capes, no swinging watches. Everyone starts with a quick Discovery Call, followed by a free Initial Consultation — so you know exactly what you're saying yes to.

The approach

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines positive psychotherapy with relaxing, pleasant hypnosis, and draws on our understanding of how the brain works. Rather than dwelling unnecessarily on the past or repeatedly revisiting problems, our sessions focus on where you are now, where you would like to be and the small, achievable steps that can help you move towards that future.

Sessions are positive, collaborative and forward-focused. We’ll help you notice what is already working, recognise the strengths and resources you already have, and explore the small, achievable steps that move you towards your preferred future.

You are not expected to relive or describe difficult experiences in detail in order to take part. We’ll talk a little about what has brought you here, but the emphasis stays on what you’d like to be different and how to get there.

During your Initial Consultation, we’ll also explain some of the ways the brain can respond to stress and anxiety, in simple, everyday language. Understanding why we can sometimes think, feel and behave the way we do is often reassuring in itself, and gives useful context for the work we do together. It also helps you decide whether this approach feels right for you.

Hypnosis forms the other part of the process, using guided relaxation and focused attention to support the work we’ve done in the session. It’s a natural state — much like daydreaming or losing yourself in a good book — and you remain aware and in control throughout.

Your journey

From first chat to lasting change.

01

Discovery Call

We begin with a short, informal chat on the phone. It’s a chance to tell us briefly what you’d like support with, ask any initial questions, and get a feel for whether working together feels right for you. It’s quick, friendly and completely no-pressure — there’s nothing to prepare and no obligation to book anything afterwards.

02

Free Initial Consultation

Your Initial Consultation is FREE until 31 December 2026. It’s a 1:1 appointment of 30–60 minutes, in person in Thames Ditton or online via Google Meet.

  • We talk about what you’d like support with, and what you’d like to be different
  • We gather some relevant background information about you
  • We talk a little about what has brought you to us — without needing to go into unnecessary detail
  • We explain how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works
  • We explain how the brain can respond to stress and anxiety, in simple everyday language
  • We describe exactly what future sessions will look like
  • We answer your questions and talk honestly about whether the approach feels right for you

It’s designed to feel informative and reassuring rather than like a treatment session.

03

Regular sessions

At the beginning of each session, we’ll spend time talking about what has been going well and the positive changes you’ve noticed. Rather than concentrating on everything that has gone wrong, we’ll explore where you’d like to be and the small steps that can help you move towards your preferred future. We may use questions and techniques such as scaling and preferred-future thinking to help you recognise your strengths, resources and progress.

The second part of the session includes hypnosis — a guided state of focused relaxation designed to complement the solution-focused work we’ve done together. Hypnosis is entirely collaborative: you stay aware, in control, and can open your eyes or stop at any time.

04

Reviewing progress

We review how things are going throughout, rather than only at the end. Sessions are shaped around you and what’s changing week to week — there’s no identical script that everyone follows, and no pressure to continue for longer than is genuinely useful.

The science, briefly

A calmer nervous system, in plain English.

When we’re calm, we tend to be using the thoughtful, problem-solving part of the brain — the part that sees perspective and makes good decisions. When stress builds up, we shift more towards the older, more reactive part: anxious, irritable, or shut down. It’s designed to keep us safe, but it’s also where anxiety, low mood and unhelpful habits tend to live.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works with both. In the conversation, we focus on the small evidence of things going well, which encourages the calmer, more rational way of thinking. In hypnosis, deep relaxation gives the mind space to process the week and settle into the patterns we’re building.

Nothing about it is mysterious. Because we’re working with how the brain naturally learns, change tends to feel gradual and manageable rather than a battle of willpower.

Frequently asked

Questions people usually ask.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines solution-focused psychotherapy with hypnosis. Rather than continually revisiting where you have been, we focus on where you would like to be, what you’d like to be different, and the small, achievable steps that get you there. Each session includes guided relaxation and hypnosis to support the work we’ve done together.

What do I do first?

Start with a Discovery Call — a quick, friendly, informal chat. You can briefly tell us what you’d like help with, ask any questions, and decide whether you’d like to go ahead with an Initial Consultation. There’s no pressure and nothing to prepare.

Is the Initial Consultation free?

Yes — Initial Consultations are FREE until 31 December 2026. It’s a 1:1 appointment of 30–60 minutes where we talk about what you’d like support with, explain how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works, describe what future sessions look like and answer your questions.

How much are sessions?

Yes. All prices — excluding the Initial Consultation, which is free — are half price until 31 December 2026: regular session £45, 6-session package £205, smoking cessation £125, and the phobia programme £175 for three sessions.

Will I have to talk in detail about difficult things from my past?

No. You are never expected to relive or describe difficult experiences in detail to take part in this approach. We’ll talk a little about what has brought you to us, but the emphasis is firmly on where you’d like to be and how to get there.

Will I be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation — similar to daydreaming or the moments just before falling asleep. You remain aware, in control and can open your eyes at any time. It’s a collaborative process throughout.

Can I be made to do something I don’t want to do?

No. Hypnosis is not mind control. You cannot be made to say or do anything against your values.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients see meaningful progress in 6 to 12 sessions. Phobias can often be resolved in fewer. We review progress together as we go, and there is no pressure to continue longer than is genuinely helpful.
